Our naturopathic approach to preventing, treating, and managing diabetes
Diabetes is a health condition that is best avoided because once it happens, the only thing left to do is to manage it efficiently as there is no cure. This metabolic disorder is a result of high blood sugar due to the failure of the body to produce the insulin needed to convert the blood sugar to glucose. Diabetes affects about 4.9% of Australians, and a substantial number of these people are women. Our approach to treating and managing diabetes focuses on helping the patient maintain a healthy level of blood sugar no matter which type of diabetes they actually have.
The prevalence of diabetes is not isolated to Australia; it is a global phenomenon. There are different types of diabetes which include;
Type 1 Diabetes
This is caused when the immune system automatically destroys the beta cells, which are the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. This diabetes is mostly diagnosed in young people and children. It is possible to manage this type of diabetes and live a long and healthy life as long as they maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
Type 2 Diabetes
This diabetes is the one in which the body cells don’t respond to insulin as they should, and if it progresses, the body may be unable to produce sufficient insulin. When uncontrolled, it leads to high blood sugar, which can cause severe complications.
This is diabetes that is diagnosed during pregnancy and affects how the body converts glucose. It can be easily managed with exercise, healthy food, and sometimes, medication.
We focus on the person and develop a strategy based on our observations of various factors cutting across behavioural, lifestyle, environmental, and genetic, all of which play a role in causing diabetes. Our naturopathic doctors are trained in counselling and nutrition, which enables them to engage the patients and help them adapt to a new healthy lifestyle.
We understand how difficult it could be at times to adapt to a new norm, especially when it has to do with diet and lifestyle. Thus, we devise a bespoke strategy for each person that works for them based on their current lifestyles and slowly ease them into a healthier and better lifestyle. We never forget to educate the patients on the ultimate reason for making the decision as we have found out a reminder of the reason is enough to keep many people steadfast.
No matter the stage of progression for the disease, naturopathic treatments can still achieve significant improvement in your overall health. However, we encourage people to come to us as early as possible once they discover the symptoms or have been diagnosed so that the treatment and management can be more effective and sustainable. Chronic diabetes can be fatal, and like all diseases, prevention is always better than treatment.
