Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or Heartburn

What is heartburn?

Heartburn is backflow (reflux) of acidic digestive juices from your stomach back into the esophagus.

Occasional heartburn is normal but having heartburn more than twice per week is severe enough to impact your life and could also damage your esophagus. This is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

  • Please note we have used the American spelling of esophegus. It is also commonly spelled oesophegus and referred to as GORD.

What causes GERD?

In a normal esophagus, a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter, opens for food to enter the stomach and then closes to stop the food flowing back up into the esophagus, known as reflux.

In the esophagus of a patient with GERD, the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes at random, allowing stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus.  This can be very uncomfortable or even painful.

If you are suffering from heartburn or reflux on a regular basis, it's time to address the problem and find some releif.
